BRIANNA & MICHAEL • JUNE 11, 2010

Posted in Recent Weddings & Commitments, Wedding Reception Venues, What's New At Michael ONeill Fine Art on June 16, 2010 by moneill2

This weekend the creative team at Michael ONeill Fine Art was joined by yet another guest photographer/student.  Ryan Kaplan drove down from Suffern, NY to join us on a wedding assignment.  Ryan has been studying with some of the best photographers in the business including Doug Gordon and Kevin Kubota.  It was a pleasure having him along on Brianna & Michael’s wedding day.

We started our day with Brianna at her parent’s home in Laurel, NY.  After creating some dramatic images of the beautiful bride we were off to Our Lady of Good Counsel church for the wedding ceremony.  Afterwards a motorcade of vintage hot rods brought the bridal party back to the bride’s home for a short photo session.  Cocktails, dinner and dancing followed at the fabulous catering venue, Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, NY.

These are just a few of the 800+ images we created for Brianna & Michael on their wedding day.  The rest of their photographs will be on my web site for your viewing pleasure when the newlyweds return from their honeymoon.  In the meantime we invite you to enjoy this video recap of their big day.

Thanks go out to my creative team at Michael ONeill Fine Art for their hard work in making this couple’s wedding imagery so special.  I’d especially like to thank Brianna & Michael for granting me the privilege and pleasure of capturing their wedding memories.  You guys were amazing to work with.  I wish you all the best for a long and happy life together.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW HOME

WOW.  Almost 2 weeks ahead of schedule we’re all moved in and open for business at our new studio and gallery location.  The new home of Michael ONeill Fine Art is located at 81 Larkfield Road, East Northport, NY 11731.  Please make note of the new address.  Our phone number remains unchanged at (631) 651-9498.  A lot of you have been asking for pictures so here they are…a short photographic tour of the premises.

Many years ago this building housed the East Northport movie theater.  A fantastic renovation transformed the old movie house into the art deco styled structure you see today.

When you enter the lobby you are immediately given a view into our gallery through a large expanse of glass.

The reception area is painted in a bold red color, is lit by custom low-voltage wall wash recessed lighting fixtures and features two large windows looking into our client consultation room.

Behind the double French doors the client consultation room has a gallery of wedding images along with some exquisitely framed portraits.  There are custom cabinets to hold all of our sample wedding albums and a large flat screen television is installed on a built in pedestal for viewing our video productions.  Just outside this room a few of our favorite fine art images are displayed.

A doorway from the client consultation area leads directly into our computer workstation room.  It is here that we do all of our image enhancements, award-winning album designs and fine art pigment ink printing.

A long hallway runs the length of the premises and has been set up as a gallery for my fine art body of work.

The next room you come to is still a work in progress.  For lack of a better name we’ll refer to this as our production room.  In this room you’ll find a custom cabinet that holds all of our picture framing corner samples.  We offer custom picture framing from complete lines of Decor and Larson Juhl moldings (along with mats from Nielsen-Bainbridge and Crescent).

Further down the hallway you arrive at our camera room which features state-of-the-art Norman lighting gear, Studio Dynamics backdrops, A Denny Mfg. motorized background lift, a large equipment safe and a pair of rollaway cabinets that stow all of our production accessories away out of view.

Finally, at the end of the hallway there is a large storage room (which is already pretty well packed with our outgoing orders, office supplies, promotional materials, etc.).  A kitchenette, a private bathroom and a utility storage closet finishes off the space.

I’ve got to thank a lot of people who helped us get up and running at the new space.  Thanks to my buddy Randy Miller (Telecommunications, Voice, Data and Fiber Specialist) for seeing that every room in the place got working telephone and internet/data jacks.  Thanks to Tom Brennan for doing a great job converting two small offices into one nice sized camera room.  Thanks to Keith Vaneski of K & C Electric for the amazing low voltage wall wash lights, track lighting, baffled flourescent fixtures, programmable dimmers and general rewiring as needed.  Thanks to Erik and his amazing Craft Painting crew for coloring this place in less than a day!  Thanks to Steven and Kevin for the truck and the muscle, making the move into the new crib totally painless.  Special thanks to my amazing girlfriend, Vivian, for the countless errands, non-stop vacuuming and the seemingly endless number of picture frames cleaned.  Your tireless efforts, sacrifices and support mean the world to me.

Stay tuned to Facebook and this blog for information on our upcoming grand opening reception.  We look forward to having all of our friends, family, colleagues and clients over to celebrate our new home.

NOLAN’S BAR MITZVAH • JUNE 5, 2010

Posted in Recent Weddings & Commitments, Wedding Reception Venues, What's New At Michael ONeill Fine Art on June 8, 2010 by moneill2

One of the greatest things about this crazy business I’ve made a life of is the way we can build relationships with our clients that last decades.  I first met Paula & Michael in 1991 when I had the pleasure of photographing their wedding.  Fast forward 20 years and I’ve photographed the weddings of their siblings, the Bat Mitzvah of their daughter, Gennah, and now the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Nolan.

Two days before the actual Bar Mitzvah celebration I met with Paula, Michael, Gennah and Nolan, along with the proud Grandparents, at South Huntington Jewish Center.  After creating formal portraits at temple with the family and Rabbi we retired to the family’s home for some casual and fun pictures.

Nolan’s big night was expertly catered by Steven Perlmutter and his professional Crystal Caterers crew.  The theme of the night was a sports-inspired “Wide World of Nolan”.  Both Nolan, and his Dad Michael, are hard core, season ticket holding, New York Jets football team fans.  Michael surprised everyone by arranging for Nolan to be escorted into the party by some of The New York Jets Flight Crew cheerleaders.

These are just a few of the 700+ images we created for Nolan and his family on the big day.  Thanks go out to my creative team at Michael ONeill Fine Art for their hard work in making this family’s photographic and video memories so special.  I’d especially like to thank Paula & Michael for granting me, once again, the privilege and pleasure of capturing their family’s most important memories.  I wish you all the best in the future and look forward to sharing many more simchehs with your family.

Apologies for yet another delinquent blog post.  In addition to photographing two events this past weekend we opened the doors to our brand new studio last week…two weeks ahead of schedule!  To say we’ve been busy is an understatement.  I hope to get a blog post up this week with a virtual tour of the new place.  Stay tuned to this blog for information on our grand opening reception.  Now back one week to May 29, 2010…

This weekend the creative team at Michael ONeill Fine Art was joined by another guest photographer/student.  Western Idaho photographer, Josiah Freeman, flew in from Spokane, WA to spend the weekend with us.  Josiah applied for a mentorship with me a few months back and came to New York eager to learn some of the techniques I use to create my award-winning images.  In addition to accompanying us on this wedding assignment Josiah got to sit in on my wedding workflow the day after the event.

We started our day with Kathryn at her parent’s home in Fort Salonga, NY.  After creating some dramatic images of the beautiful bride we were off to St. Joseph’s RC Church in Kings Park for the wedding ceremony followed by a short portrait session with the bride and groom on the church grounds.  Stops in Belle Terre Village and a private beach on Port Jefferson harbor made for lots of fun photos with the bridal party.   Cocktails, dinner and dancing followed at the fabulous catering venue, Lombardi’s on the Sound, located at The Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills.

These are just a dozen of the 900 images we created for Kathryn & Steven on their wedding day.

I’d especially like to thank Kathryn & Steven for granting me the privilege and pleasure of capturing their wedding memories.  I wish you all the best for a long and happy life together.

This weekend the creative team at Michael ONeill Fine Art was joined by another guest photographer, Kelly Brown, from J.A.Y.S. Photography in Columbus, Ohio.  Kelly applied for a mentorship with me a few months back and came to New York eager to learn some of the techniques I use to create my award-winning images.  In addition to this wedding assignment Kelly got to sit in on one of my bridal sales consultations (Yes, Kelly…they called back Monday morning and booked me for their big day) and also accompanied me on a couple of engagement sessions. You can read Kelly’s take on this experience in the “notes” section of her Facebook page.  Check out her recap (and photographs) from the big day on her blog.

We started our day with Elizabeth on the penthouse level of the world class Garden City Hotel on Long Island.  After creating some dramatic images of the beautiful bride we were off to St. Anne’s RC Church for the wedding ceremony followed by a trip to The Woodlands at Woodbury, NY for photos, cocktails, dinner and dancing.

These are just a few of the 750+ images we created for Elizabeth & Michael on their wedding day.

I’d especially like to thank Elizabeth & Michael for granting me the privilege and pleasure of capturing their wedding memories.  I wish you all the best for a long and happy life together.

NEW HOME FOR MICHAEL ONEILL FINE ART

Posted in Breaking News, Fine Art Photography, Press, The Business of Photography, Upcoming Shows and Appearances, What's New At Michael ONeill Fine Art on May 13, 2010 by moneill2

It is with great joy that I announce that we finalized the real estate transactions today for the new home of Michael ONeill Fine Art.  Our new studio and gallery will be located at 81 Larkfield Road, East Northport, NY in a newly renovated historical building on this main mercantile thoroughfare.  Our past gallery locations have been on Larkfield Road since 1984 and it feels great to return to this wonderful community following a brief period of working from our home.

Formerly the East Northport movie theater, this property has been completely renovated into luxury space with an art deco feel inside and out.  When you enter the main lobby a large expanse of glass looks in to the Michael ONeill Fine Art gallery space.

Beyond that glass is the reception area with glass-partitioned walls and double french doors wrapping around the conference area.

The open format conference area will serve as our client consultation space and also as a small ‘classroom’ for the photography workshops I offer here on Long Island.  Our computer workstations and fine art printing room will be located in the office immediately adjacent to the conference area.  This office opens directly into the conference area allowing our clients access to our computer workstations, where we retouch and enhance our images, and create our award-winning custom album designs.

A long hallway runs the length of the facility and will be set up as our fine art photography gallery.  The initial presentation here will be of my fine art works, but plans to host shows for other photographic artists are in the future.  The second office space in line will be our production/fulfillment area.

The wall between the third and fourth offices will be removed and the area will become our camera room.  In addition to our state-of-the-art lighting gear a north facing glass block window will allow for beautiful natural light portraiture indoors!

At the end of the gallery hall there is a service area perfect for cosmetology and wardrobe changes.  This service area also includes a compact fully-equipped kitchenette.  A private restroom and a storage closet completes the space.

The physical move into our new home will be taking place over the next few weeks.  There is so much to do…installing telephone, internet, WiFi and security systems; construction for the camera room, accepting delivery of furnishings, adding custom interior lighting for our gallery of photographic art, etc., etc.  We are confident that the transition will be efficient and painless.  One down side of the move will be the loss of our existing telephone number.  We will be updating all of our clients and colleagues with our new information as soon as possible.  Our existing phone number will remain in place for a period of time and will forward calls to the new location.  Stay tuned to this blog for progress reports and for information on our grand opening reception to be held this summer.  Our sincerest thanks go out to all of our wonderful clients and colleagues that contributed to making this dream gallery a reality.

DONNA & JEFF • MAY 1, 2010

Posted in Breaking News, Recent Weddings & Commitments, Wedding Reception Venues, What's New At Michael ONeill Fine Art on May 6, 2010 by moneill2

Wow.  It’s been quite a while since I’ve made a post on this blog.  My apologies to all of you who have been looking for updates and recent featured weddings.  A lot has been going on around here so let me get the “Good News/Bad News” items out of the way.

First the good news: Back in early April we went into contract on the purchase of our new home.  Naturally a lot of time has been spent with attorneys, banks, appraisers, engineers and all of the other folks that are involved in a real estate transaction.  We have also made the decision to move our gallery out of the home environment, so we have been actively looking for new retail/professional space in which to locate the studios of Michael ONeill Fine Art.  I’ll be keeping all of you up to date on the details as they develop over the next month or so.

The bad news…everything got put on the back burner temporarily to be with my family, when my mother, Mary O’Neill, passed away in late April.  I want to sincerely thank all of my friends, colleagues and clients for your condolences and prayers during this sad time in my life.

So let’s get back to the happy stuff…the wedding of Donna & Jeff on May 1, 2010…

The team at Michael ONeill Fine Art was joined for this event by Brian Palmer, an up and coming photographer who came in from Akron, Ohio for a wedding photography mentorship with me this weekend.  It was great having Brian along on this assignment and his help was instrumental in creating this couple’s extraordinary wedding images.

We started our day at the hotel in Riverhead, NY where both the bride and the groom, along with their bridal attendants, were getting ready for the day ahead.  After seeing each other for the first time the happy couple and their entourage climbed aboard their luxury bus for the trip to the ceremony and reception venue, Vineyard Caterers in Aquebogue, NY, in the heart of the Long Island wine country.

The interior architecture, the formal gardens and the vineyard backdrop provided fabulous photo opportunities and we took advantage of it all when creating Donna & Jeff’s images.  We even managed to get a shot of all of the wedding guests together in one spot as the sun set over the horizon.

These are just a handful of the 700 images we created this day.  The rest of the images will be available for your viewing pleasure on my web site when the newlyweds return from their honeymoon.  In the meantime we invite you to enjoy this video slide show recap of the big day.

I’d like to thank my creative team at Michael ONeill Fine Art for their help in making Donna & Jeff’s wedding photographs so special.  I’d especially like to thank Donna & Jeff for the privilege and pleasure of capturing their wedding memories.  You guys were a joy to work with and I look forward to seeing you next month at Brianna & Michael’s wedding.

CAROLINE, CORY & BABY MICHAEL

Posted in Fine Art Photography, Photographic Equipment, What's New At Michael ONeill Fine Art on January 9, 2010 by moneill2

Happy New Year, Everyone!  I’d love to start the new year off with a wonderful blog post about some good friends, Caroline & Cory, who are celebrating the arrival of their first child…a beautiful baby boy named Michael.  I took a little time out of my schedule to visit the happy family at their home and create a few wonderful photographs that I’m sure they will cherish for years to come.  These photographs were made, of all places, right in the family’s kitchen where some wonderful north light was streaming in through the rear window.  All of the photographs were made on my Nikon D3 camera and 24-70mm f2.8G ED Nikkor lens using only the available light.

I wish Caroline, Cory and Baby Michael “All The Best” for a beautiful future.  It was a pleasure to be a small part of your happiness.
